Blast from the Past: X’s More Fun in the New World

You know I like rock star couples. Well, here’s a punk rock star couple (er…. ex-couple) that I still revere. “More Fun in the New World” is a mature but still rough album from one of LA’s greatest punk bands. Fronted by Exene Cervenka and John Doe, X’s slash-and-burn music and howling harmonies provide a soundtrack for the American Nightmare, a self-inflicted wound. X, with the help of Ray Manzarek of The Doors, threw punk, rockabilly, protest music, and the fear and loathing of god into a blender and set it on blitz. Their early albums, peaking with New World, tell tales of star-crossed lovers, cynics, down-and-outers, and dive bars’ regulars trying to block out the big black sun. Think about the early Reagan years and how miserable that was. Then think about where we are now. “I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts,” indeed.
